I am interested in telling a story in pictures and photographing for books was a natural development in my career. I worked on several Time-Life books as a young photographer and the editor Pamala Mark left a lasting impression on me by explaining the difference between an illustrated book and a photographic book. A photographic book that is about one subject must be picture led. Pictures are not used
a decoration. A photographic book that features images from multiple sources needs to have a very strong design to keep from being a visual mess.

The information in a news picture is immediate, now a days a magazine picture is usually features a celebrity’s lifestyle, and an advertising picture entices you to spend. These publications are in the bin several days after reading. Really are these lasting images.

Pictures in books have a much longer life and should require more than one look, the best pictures may be looked at many times.

Photographer’s monographs are a different matter, they are works of art in themselves.
